February 23, 2025

In a significant step toward enhancing digital literacy and economic empowerment among young people, Hon. Gitonga Mukunji, in collaboration with officials from the Ministry of ICT and Digital Economy, has officially handed over the site for the construction of the first-ever Center of Excellence Digital ICT Hub in Embu County. The groundbreaking event took place at the DCC’s office in Manyatta Market, marking the commencement of an ambitious project under the Jitume Program.

This milestone event was attended by key stakeholders, including Embu North Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Mr. Walter Ngaire, representatives from Konza Technopolis, and local leaders, all of whom reiterated the importance of digital transformation in the region.

The ICT hub, which will house 200 high-performance computers, is designed to equip young people with essential digital skills while also providing access to online job opportunities. With a projected completion timeline of six months, the facility is expected to become a game-changer in the county’s efforts to bridge the digital divide and create sustainable employment for the youth.

Speaking at the site handover, Hon. Gitonga Mukunji underscored the government’s commitment to integrating technology into everyday economic activities. “This is a game-changer for Embu County. We are not only ensuring that our youth are digitally literate, but we are also creating avenues for them to access global job opportunities right from their home county,” he stated.

A Hub for Digital Transformation

The ICT hub will offer a range of training programs, including:

  • Digital marketing and e-commerce
  • Software development and coding
  • Graphic design and animation
  • Cybersecurity and data analysis
  • Freelancing and online remote work opportunities

Additionally, through strategic partnerships with the private sector and international organizations, the hub will serve as a center for mentorship, training, and networking, ensuring that young people in Manyatta and beyond can compete in the fast-evolving global digital economy.

Government’s Commitment to ICT Growth

Representatives from the Ministry of ICT and Digital Economy reaffirmed their commitment to rolling out similar projects across different counties to ensure Kenya remains at the forefront of the digital revolution. A representative from Konza Technopolis noted that embracing digital technology is key to transforming Kenya into a knowledge-based economy.

Embu North DCC Mr. Walter Ngaire highlighted the broader impact of the Jitume Program, stating: “This initiative is not just about education—it’s about empowerment. With the right skills and infrastructure, our youth will no longer have to migrate to cities for opportunities. Instead, technology will bring opportunities to them.”

A Vision for the Future

Hon. Mukunji also emphasized that this ICT hub is the first of many initiatives aimed at ensuring that Manyatta community remains competitive in the digital era. “We are not stopping here. This is just the beginning. Our vision is to make Embu a leader in digital innovation and employment,” he added.

As the construction phase begins, stakeholders have expressed optimism that the project will uplift hundreds of young people, ensuring they are well-equipped to take advantage of the numerous opportunities in the digital space.

The establishment of the Center of Excellence Digital ICT Hub is a clear testament to the government’s commitment to youth empowerment, digital transformation, and economic growth in Kenya.

With the groundbreaking now complete, all eyes are on Manyatta as the construction progresses, with anticipation high for the grand launch of the facility in the coming months.
