UPPER KATHITA SWITCHES ON: LAST MILE ELECTRIFICATION PROGRAM LIGHTS UP KIRIMARI WARD

Kirimari Ward, Embu County – In a continued effort to ensure equitable access to development opportunities, the Upper Kathita Informal Settlement in Kirimari Ward has officially joined the growing list of electrified areas under the Last Mile Connectivity Program spearheaded by the Manyatta NG-CDF in partnership with the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC).

This milestone marks a significant step forward in the mission to provide modern infrastructure across all corners of Manyatta Constituency, regardless of geographical or socio-economic status. Dozens of households in Upper Kathita now have access to reliable electricity—ushering in new opportunities for education, business, health, and general wellbeing.

“We are committed to delivering inclusive development. This partnership with REREC ensures that even the most underserved communities like Upper Kathita can benefit from basic infrastructure such as electricity,” said the NG-CDF Manyatta office in a statement.

For many families in the area, this connection brings a long-awaited end to years of reliance on lanterns and unsafe lighting alternatives. The availability of electricity now opens the door for longer business hours, enhanced home security, and improved learning conditions for school-going children.

“Now my children can study at night, and I’m planning to start a small salon with electric equipment. This is the kind of support we’ve been praying for,” said one elated resident.

The ongoing connectivity program reflects the broader vision of “Lighting Up Manyatta, Village by Village”, an approach that combines strategic planning, transparency, and public participation. It also aligns with national goals of ensuring universal access to electricity as a driver of economic transformation at the grassroots level.

The NG-CDF and REREC collaboration has already delivered results across several settlements in Manyatta and plans are underway to expand into more areas in the coming months. The leadership has assured residents that no household will be left behind as long as resources and partnerships remain available.

“We are not stopping here,” the NG-CDF team added. “We are moving on to the next village. We will continue to light up Manyatta until every home is empowered.”

The electrification at Upper Kathita serves as both a success story and a symbol of hope for other informal settlements waiting for their turn. As the sun sets over Kirimari Ward, the newly glowing homes of Upper Kathita now shine as a beacon of progress.
