EMBU COFFEE SHINES AS GAKUNDU FARMERS CELEBRATE RECORD PAYOUTS

Manyatta ,Embu: Kenya – The sweet aroma of success is in the air for coffee farmers in Manyatta constituency as the constituency continues to reap impressive returns, following the coffee sector reforms initiated last year. Leading the charge is Gakundu Farmers Co-operative Society, which has posted some of the highest rates in the region, bringing renewed hope and pride to local growers.
Farmers under the Gakundu Co-operative are celebrating the new payout rates, which reflect not only the improving global coffee market but also the fruits of deliberate reforms aimed at restoring transparency, profitability, and dignity in the coffee sector.
“When farmers are happy, we are happy,” said a local agricultural officer. “This is what we envisioned—a coffee value chain that rewards the hard work and dedication of our farmers.”
The reforms, backed by Hon.Mukunji and national government initiatives, targeted critical issues such as delayed payments, exploitation by middlemen, and inefficiencies in marketing and milling. Through these changes, co-operative societies like Gakundu have been empowered to deal directly with buyers and manage their operations more professionally.
Gakundu’s leadership has also been credited with maintaining high standards in cherry collection, farmer training, and ethical financial practices—all of which have contributed to the exceptional returns being seen today.
The celebrations go beyond money—they represent a shift in confidence. Young people are once again showing interest in coffee farming. Families are rebuilding. Communities are thriving.
“These are the results we hoped for when we pushed for reforms,” said one elated farmer from Ruguru. “We can now afford school fees, improve our homes, and reinvest in our farms.”
As Embu’s coffee continues to gain momentum on both local and international stages, stakeholders are urging continued unity, accountability, and innovation to ensure sustainability in the sector.
Congratulations to Gakundu Farmers Co-operative Society and to all Embu coffee farmers. Your hard work is bearing fruit—literally and economically.
