Gaturi South, March 23, 2025 – Institution’s Growth from 150 to 1,800 Students Highlights the Rising Demand for Technical Education

Hon. Gitonga Mukunji today held a productive engagement with students and staff at Manyatta Technical and Vocational College, where he lauded the institution’s remarkable growth from an initial population of 150 students to the current 1,800. The visit underscored the importance of technical education in equipping young people with practical skills essential for national development.

During the visit, Hon. Mukunji announced a series of development initiatives aimed at enhancing the college’s infrastructure, addressing security concerns, and securing more funding for students pursuing various technical courses.

New Storey Block to Accommodate Growing Student Population

Recognizing the institution’s rapid expansion, Hon. Mukunji confirmed that funds have been allocated for the construction of a modern storey block to ease congestion and provide additional learning spaces.

“The increasing number of students is a clear indication that technical education is gaining traction. To support this growth, we have set aside funds for the construction of a new building that will accommodate more students and improve the overall learning environment,” he stated.

The new block will include additional classrooms, workshops, and administrative offices, ensuring that students have access to quality facilities as they undertake their courses.

Addressing Security Concerns: Increased Police Patrols

In response to concerns raised by students and staff regarding security challenges around the college, Hon. Mukunji assured them that immediate measures were being taken to enhance safety.

“We have engaged security agencies, and there is a firm commitment that police patrols around the institution will be increased to ensure the safety of students and staff,” he announced.

This move is expected to curb incidents of insecurity in the area, particularly during evening hours when students leave campus after classes.

Pushing for Increased Student Funding

Hon. Mukunji also pledged to engage the Ministry of Education to advocate for increased funding for students enrolled in various technical courses. He emphasized that vocational training plays a critical role in bridging the skills gap in Kenya, and ensuring access to financial support will encourage more youth to enroll.

“We understand that financial constraints remain a challenge for many students. We will be working closely with the Ministry to ensure more funding is made available for those taking technical courses, so that no student is left behind due to lack of resources,” he affirmed.
