Hon. Gitonga Mukunji Launches Mobile Laboratories for Junior Secondary Schools in Manyatta Constituency

Manyatta Constituency has taken a historic step in revolutionizing STEM education with the launch of mobile laboratories for Junior Secondary Schools. The initiative, spearheaded by Hon. Gitonga Mukunji, aims to enhance hands-on learning experiences for students undertaking Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects in line with the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

The launch event, held in Manyatta, marked the distribution of mobile laboratories to seven Junior Secondary Schools, making the constituency the first in the country to implement such a program. The mobile laboratories are designed to bridge the gap in practical science education, ensuring that students can access high-quality, practical learning resources, regardless of their school’s infrastructure.

“This project is a game-changer for our students. It will empower them with the necessary skills for the modern workforce and ensure they gain practical exposure to STEM subjects from an early stage,” said Hon. Gitonga Mukunji during the launch.

The initiative is a collaborative effort between the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) and the Ministry of Education through the School Equipment Production Unit (SEPU). Dr. Joel Mabonga, CEO of SEPU, expressed his support for the project, emphasizing its potential to improve the quality of STEM education across Kenya. Also present at the event was Elizabeth Kutundu from the NG-CDF Board in Nairobi, who commended Manyatta for pioneering this transformative program.

Following the successful launch, Manyatta Constituency has secured approval from the NG-CDF Board for an additional 48 mobile laboratories, which will be distributed to more Junior Secondary Schools in the coming months. This expansion underscores the constituency’s commitment to advancing education and equipping young learners with the tools necessary for success in a rapidly evolving job market.

“This is just the beginning. Our goal is to ensure that every Junior Secondary School in the constituency is well-equipped to deliver quality STEM education,” Hon. Mukunji added.

The rollout of mobile laboratories is expected to set a precedent for other constituencies, with Manyatta leading the way in embracing innovative education solutions. As the CBC curriculum continues to take root, such initiatives will play a crucial role in preparing students for future careers in science and technology.

Impact on STEM Education

The mobile laboratories will provide students with access to essential scientific equipment, enabling them to conduct experiments and develop a deeper understanding of STEM concepts. This initiative aligns with the government’s broader efforts to enhance practical learning and improve the quality of education in Kenya.

As Manyatta Constituency continues to champion educational development, the mobile laboratories project stands as a testament to the power of collaboration between the government, educational institutions, and community stakeholders in shaping the future of Kenya’s youth.
